Happy 2025 World Shorebirds Day!

Each year, 6 September is more than a date — it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, and how far we still need to go for shorebirds.

Together with The Ornithologist magazine, we’ve built a tradition of looking back at the year between two World Shorebirds Days. This year’s review article reflects on what was achieved in conservation and shorebird science, where we fell short, and the urgent priorities ahead.

It is a story of contrasts: protection gained at some key sites, but also wetlands lost to drought and development; fresh science revealing new challenges, but also inspiring examples of citizen science shaping decisions.
